‘Mediolanum, what a beautiful name for a city! It begins and ends with the same letter, “m,” of all the letters, the most majestic and solemn, and preserves in its center an “o,” symbol of its perfect circular form, like the form of its walls.’
The lively description, tasting of the medieval, derives from the treatise, “The Marvels of Milan” (1288) by Bonvesin de la Riva, a writer in love with his city.
To verify the veracity of his account, we will explore them, together, starting with the ancient Roman columns in front of St. Lawrence, not far from the medieval Cicca Gate in the center of the Milanese quarter most rich with Bonvesin’s memories.
