Milan’s Monumental Cemetery is a complex place which it is possible to read in various ways. In it not only are the stages of the various artistic seasons seen, but also the history and the most self-representative image of the city. Scanning the names incised on the monuments is, in fact, like consulting a kind of Milanese Who’s Who of the day, since those buried in the Monumental Cemetery were of a high social status, or at least had reached a certain economic stability.
The Monumental Cemetery is an extraordinary “open air museum,” that represents the historical events of the city and the life of its protagonists, as well as the changes in art and aesthetic taste, and is a “museum” that has been growing progressively for decades.
