Today’s day trip of the Friends of the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum Association takes you to see monumental historic witnesses around Alessandria. (in Italian)

At Rivalta Scrivia, the Cistercian Abbey of St. Mary – founded in 1180 – was of significant historical and economic importance above all in the 12th and 13th centuries. Of the original monastic complex, situated in a strategic position at the crossroads of ancient Roman roads that became important medieval commercial and pilgrimage routes, today remain:

  • the Gothic church (12th and 13th centuries)
  • the Chapterhouse in Cistercian Gothic style
  • the grand Renaissance cloister.

In parallel to EXPO 2015, an exhibit of antique icons and of contemporary paintings on the Apocalypse has been set up in the abbey.

At Bosco Marengo, the monumental complex of the Holy Cross constitutes one of the most representative aspects of the cultural patrimony of Piedmont. It reveals a singular connection with the Tuscan-Roman culture in northern Italy. The architectonic whole was desired by Pope Pius V (papacy 1566-1572), a native of Bosco Marengo, and includes:

  • the Church of the Holy Cross
  • the complex of the convent.

The convent, under the direction of the Dominican order, had many illustrious guests including Napoleon Bonaparte who, however, decreed its suppression. Since then, it has ceased to be a monastic seat. Currently, after careful restoration, an area of the antique complex houses a museum dedicated to Giorgio Vasari, a painter, sculptor, architect, and treatise writer who contributed in a significant way to the realization of the project desired by Pope Pius V.
