The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is the most important museum in Italy for European and American art of the first half of the 20th century. It is located in the erstwhile home of Petty Guggenheim, the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Canal Grande in Venice. Opened in 1951 by a descendant of Solomon R. Guggenhim (a rich American industrialist and art collector), the museum hosts Peggy’s personal collection of 20th century art, but also other collections and temporary exhibits. The permanent collection boasts some masterpieces especially of Cubism, Futurism, Pittura Metafisica, European abstraction, Surrealism and American Abstract Expressionism.
