GIACOMO ANTONIO CERUTI called IL PITOCHETTO, The meeting at the well, c.a. 1750
The Seduction of Beauty
Secret Masterpieces from the 17th and 18th Centuries
curated by Antonio D’Amico
15 October 2022 – 12 March 2023
The works of the Gastaldi Rotelli collection are leaving their current locationto be shown in a new historical mansion; the selection of about 50 pieces will allow a dialogue between the works and the place. However, the identity of each piece will remain unbothered. The visit explores the rooms of the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum
where the visitor is challenged to marvel at the details of all paintings to detect the echoes suggested by Fausto and Giuseppe Valsecchi’s home, which is itself a neo renaissance jewel in the heart of Milan.
At the end of the 20th century Gilda Gastaldi and Giuseppe Rotelli, who shared the passion for 17th and 18th century art and were attracted to the variety of its themes, started their collection taking part in auctions around the world. Across the years the collectors − who were seduced by beauty − travelled the world on the look for precious works of art. The collection hosts the work of relevant Lombard and Venetian artists of the 15th
and 16th century. It is not always easy to understand the content of the paintings. It is in the gestures, in the eyes, and in the specific scenes that the symbols hide to be uncovered and understood. Only the eye of the expert will catch all the cues and shatter the illusion.
The Bagatti Valsecchi Museum is now openly welcoming its origins and returns to the moment in which it warmly hosted all arts. With this exhibition the Museum is willing to become an unique home for other collections. This choice allows its public to explore the pieces which were previously hidden in the collector’s houses.
