At Lonato, an antique village in the rocky hills extending southward from Garda Lake in the territory of Brescia, there is the fifteenth century “House of the Chief Magistrate” (Podestà). Having become the residence of Senater Ugo da Como (1869-1941) in the 20th century, today it is an evocative historic house museum in which the elegant furnishings and precious objects collected by him are preserved. A pleasant garden forms the house’s flowery frame.

Not far from the lake’s shores, on Garda’s island an extraordinary and majestic villa in Venetian Neo-Gothic can be admired. Outside, a large park, sloping down to the lake, terraces and Italian-style gardens ornamented with vigorous and rare vegetation add to the villa’s appeal.

Another historic residence of significant interest is at Calvagese della Riviera, a little center situated on the slopes near the southwestern shore of the lake. It is a seventeenth-century mansion, now the seat of the Fondazione Luciano Sorlini, named after a Brescian businessman (1925-2015) who was a passionate collector. In this building, he wanted to situate the rich collections – mostly Venetian paintings of the eighteenth century by such artists as Tiepolo, Guardi, Canaletto, Carriera,… – he had gathered. Today, the exhibition spaces make up the MarteS – the Museum of Art Sorlini – open to the public since March 2018 according to the wishes of the founder, who in this way wanted to favor and disseminate the knowledge of art and to highlight its value.
