The tie between Cremona and the manfacture of stringed instruments is unbreakable and very old.
The Museum of the Violin (MdV) in Cremona adds a new and splendid page to history by making available to the international community – thanks to the sensibility and generous contribution of the Arvedi Buschini Foundation – an important structure that unites the functions of museum, auditorium and research center. At the MdV, it is possible to discover five centuries of the manufacture of stringed instruments in Cremona through an encounter with the great masters and their instruments: Andrea Amati, the founder, his sons Antonio e Girolamo, his grandson Nicolò, Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri “del Gesù” and his family, Francesco Rugeri, and Lorenzo Storioni.
Thanks to the contribution of the collections of the city of Cremona and of the “Walter Stauffer” Foundation, of masterpieces entrusted to the city regarding the “Friends of the Stradivari” network, of the original molds and instruments donated by Giuseppe Fiorini, no other museum in Europe, today, can boast such an important and complete collection of string instruments of the school of Cremona.
The 19th and the 20th centuries are experienced through the works of the principal Italian string instrument makers and the winning examples of the International Triennial Competition, while in the museum – in dedicated areas – a significant homage to contemporary masters is given because thanks to them the manufacture of stringed instruments, today, is as current, alive, and vibrant as ever.
Multimedia installations and rich documentation allow everyone – from kids to tourists to the expert visitor – to experience an evocative and engaging journey in which instruments, perfumes, sounds, and images collaborate to give form to history, dreams, and emotions.
