Like seeing masterpieces of art? Caravaggio, Raphael, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Bramante, Michelangelo, Titian, even Leonardo and company ring your chimes? Interested in historic female painters? There’s Lavinia Fontana. Prefer the quirky? How about a curl of Lucretia Borgia’s hair? Come with us for a tour (in Italian) of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana founded in Milan in 1618 thanks to the generous donation of Cardinal Federico Borromeo.
In the same building as the Ambrosian Library – and not without reason…both were formed by him for instruction and edification – there are up to 1500 works of the biggest artists in Italy in this collection, and it is one of the country’s most visited museums.
A highlight of the visit is the life-size preparatory drawing by Raphael for the School of Athens in the Vatican papal palace’s Stanza della Segnatura. After four years of restoration just completed, not only is it the only Renaissance large scale preparatory drawing that has survived to this day – it’s 285 cm x 804 cm! – but it also represents the culmination of Raphael’s creative process for one of the most representative works of the Renaissance.
