Cesare Breveglieri

Presentation of Elena Pontiggia's book

Cesare Breveglieri

To mark the publication of the monograph Cesare Breveglieri by Elena Pontiggia (Maretti, Imola 2025), on Wednesday, January 21, at 6 p.m., the author will hold a conference dedicated to the artist, accompanied by a slide show.

Cesare Breveglieri (Milan, 1902–1948) is a unique figure who is difficult to classify within the Italian art scene of the 20th century. In Milan in the 1930s and 1940s, his painting introduced an unexpected perspective, nourished by the wonder of Henri Rousseau and Maurice Utrillo, whom he discovered during his stay in Paris in 1932. Breveglieri thus went beyond realism and naturalism, but also beyond the classicism of the 20th century, developing a pictorial language that was only apparently naive, but in reality cultured and refined.

His landscapes, urban views, interiors, and still lifes take on a fairy-tale-like, suspended tone, making his works immediately recognizable and absolutely unique. His premature death at the age of only forty-six tragically interrupted his artistic research, which was still in full development.

Elena Pontiggia's monograph is the most comprehensive and in-depth study dedicated to the artist to date.
