Tea talks
Tea Talks. Art Conversations at Casa Bagatti Valsecchi is the series of meetings meant to share art at tea time. Each appointment is dedicated to various themes that have spanned art history in connection with the museum's permanent collection and the current exhibition Lo sguardo del sentire.
The third event is dedicated to the ecstatic representations in art history: from Mary Magdalene to the Opium Smokers.
After the Council of Trent, the depiction of images capturing the champions of the Catholic faith in moments ofmystical ecstasy intensified. Ecstatic works showing the pale face of a saint who appears to be about to faint or a sorrowful young saint shrouded in semi-darkness. Starting with an analysis of Giovanni Lanfranco's Magdalene in Glory Supported by Angels, on display at the exhibition** Lo sguardo del sentire. Seventeenth-Century Emilia from the Credem Art Collections**, the temporary and provisional character of the ecstatic experience will be investigated, which will evolve in the mid-nineteenth century into more captivating subjects such as opium smokers.
